About Woodland
Woodland, CA is a city located in Yolo County, California. It is the county seat for Yolo County. The city is about 15miles northwest of Sacramento City and is included in the Sacramento Metropolitan Area.Woodland, CA, is one of the largest cities along Interstate 5, north of Sacramento, and isnicknamed the City of Trees, seeing as it’s surrounded by farmland.
Woodland, CA, has a total surface area of 15.31 square miles, all of it land. The city lies on flat land in the California Central Valley, with the Sacramento River and the Yolo Bypass to the east, and the Coast Range and the Capay Valley are to its west. It sits at an elevation of 66 feet above sea level, and enjoys a Mediterranean climate characterized by dry, hot summers and relatively wet winters.
Woodland, CA, had a total population of 55,468 residents as per the 2010 Census. In2019, the number of people in the city had risen to 60,548, according to estimates. This is a city with a rich heritage and history. The region was home to the Patwin Native Americans who settled in the area as far back as 2,000 years ago.
The first settlers moved into the Woodland, CA, area around1950 when California became a state and the subsequent establishment of Yolo County. Uncle Johnny Morris was the first person to settle in Woodland, CA, at what today is the corner of First and Clover Streets. He was joined two years later by Henry Wyckoff, who put up a store and named it Yolo City. But it wasn't until 1957, when Frank S. Freeman bought the store and purchased 160 acres of land around it, and the settlement began to expand.
Frank S. Freeman had a vision of developing the place into an important trading center for one of the highest crop-yielding areas in America. Towards this end, he started giving out land to people willing to clear it and build a home. In 1859, Freeman suggested Woodland's name to the post office, which got accepted. After opening it on July 5, 1861, Freeman became Postmaster of Woodland, CA. He started selling and leasing outbuildings for business use and further developed the town.
Woodland, CA, enjoyed continued growth in the 1860s. The county seat was moved from Washington, CA, into the town after the latter flooded. During this period, homes, churches, schools, and a cemetery were established. Publication of the Daily Democrat was also launched. The construction of a rail line by the California Pacific Railroad Company in 1869 heralded the further expansion of the town westward and southward. With a population of 1,600 people in 1870, the residents collected signatures and petitioned for incorporation of the town, and this was granted in 1871 with the incorporation of Woodland, CA.
The incorporation of Woodland, CA, brought with it a range of services to the residents. They finally had access to telegraph and telephone services, regular train operations, electricity, water, gas, and graveled streets and street lights.
The inventor of the centrifugalpump opened a shop in the city in 1872 before later moving it to San Francisco in 1879. His pumps were critical for transforming agriculture and industry in California.1900 saw the founding of the Chamber of Commerce in Woodland, CA. The city soon had a city park, a library, and a much-improved Cemetery.
By 1910, Woodland, CA was the most populated city in the county and boasted 3,187. This city continued to grow, enjoying a rise in population and businesses and industries, with a mainly agriculture-based economy.By the 50s, this city was alleged to host the most millionaires per capita of any Californian city.
There are ten elementary schools, one charter school, two middle schools, two high schools, and an adult education center in Woodland, CA. Woodland Joint Unified School District runs these, along with the Woodland Community College for tertiary education.
Woodland, CA, is home to several historic and iconic buildings preserved, and others restored for use. Most of these are found within the Downtown Woodland Historic District, which sits on roughly 370 acres. The buildings includeHotel Woodland, Porter Building, Woodland Opera House, Woodland Public Library, and the Jackson Building. The Yolo County Municipal Court is another historical building alongside The Gibson Mansion, the Gable Mansion, and the R. H. Beamer House.
