Arden-Arcade, CA is 5.100 square miles and more than 90.000 people call this city their home. But it wasn’t always like this. In fact, all the modern families living in the area are very different from the original settlers of the region.
The history of Arden-Arcade, CA is one of the highlights of the cultural modifications seen by the county of Sacramento and the state of California. Although home to many, this city’s past was quite different from what we see today.
The original settlers of the land that now is occupied by what we call Arden-Arcade, CA, were people from the Maidu tribe. The Nisenan were Native Americans who had established their homes in this area. As a matter of fact, the land belonged to John Sutter, owner of the Mexican ranch that this territory was a part of.
The territory was anything but stable. Arden-Arcade, CA was just a piece of land, and its deed was passed on from owner to owner as the years went by. James Ben Ali Haggin was one of the most relevant proprietors of the land. His interest in horses was what pushed the area to become what it is today.
Ben Ali’s bred race horses, his passion for these animals led the wealthy man to build a railroad so the horses could be transported, and eventually shipped. This railroad connected to the ones managed by Union Pacific. It was the 19th century, and this event did more than expected for the community of Arden-Arcade, CA.
The horses were mostly transported to Kentucky, but eventually they became so prestigious that they were shipped internationally. The status of the small town of Arden-Arcade, CA was perceived as starting to change.
After gaining recognition, the town of Arden-Arcade, CA was born. The owner of the land that came after Haggin was originally from Arden Hills. It’s believed that one of the words that make up the name of the city was chosen because of this.
However, “Arden” was not enough to name the new town. Near the land, there was an Arcade Boulevard. It wasn’t a place for games, but a long corridor of big arched oak trees. So then, the name Arden-Arcade, CA saw the dawn of day.
Arden-Arcade, CA was known as Rancho del Paso, an exceptional place with lands that could only be found in people’s wildest dreams. This is the reason why the entire ranch was bought by a land speculator. He wanted to develop the territory to turn it into a modern city. And so he did.
Orlando Robertson bought the land at the beginning of the 1900s. Streets and a steady supply of water were the beginning of what would become a dream land for migrants, particularly those who came from Scandinavian lands.
At some point in the first quarter of the 20th century, part of Arden-Arcade, CA was referred to as “Little Norway”. After a big number of Norwegian families decided to settle in the land, the territory started to be advertised for its fertile lands and fruity trees. Arden-Arcade, CA had become the place everyone with a passion for nature wanted to live.
