About West Sacramento
The city of West Sacramento, CA, is located in Yolo County, State of California. The city is the traditional industrial center of the region, going back to the Gold Rush days. The Sacramento River separates the city from Sacramento City. The river also acts as a boundary between the counties of Yolo and Sacramento.
This city lies in the Sacramento-Arden Arcade-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is one of the top employment centers in the region with a very diverse economy.This city was incorporated on January 1, 1987.
West Sacramento, CA, has a total surface area of 22.80 square miles. Of these, land makes up 21.47 square miles, while the remaining 1.33 square miles is water. This city sits at an elevation of 20 feet above sea level.
According to the 2010 Census, West Sacramento, CA, had a total population of 48,744 residents. In the 2019 estimates, the figure had shot up to 53,519 residents. That makes the city one of the fastest-growing communities in the region. In 2014, the city was named The Most Livable City in America in cities with less than 100,000residents.
Long before the European settlers set foot in the area that is West Sacramento, CA today, the region was home to native Patwin Indians. The Patwin's had inhabited the area for centuries,thriving as hunters and fisherfolk. This area was rich in natural resources of land and water.
In the 19th century, the same abundance of the land attracted European settlers. Most of these were hunters and trappers lured by the rich supply of fur-bearing animals. Unfortunately, they also brought diseases like smallpox and malaria, which wiped out the native population by the thousands. The native population was weakened with time, and more and more settlers moved in and dominated the region.
The first person to settle in West Sacramento, CA, was a Flemish traveler known as Jans Lows de Swart, later called John Schwartz. The year was 1844. One year later, he was given a land grant, measuring one mile wide and twenty miles long, by the Mexican Governor Manuel. He named the property Rancho Nueva Flandria and, with the help of his brother, set up a salmon fishery by the river.
In 1846, he sold 600 acres of the ranch to James McDowell, who later died in 1849. McDowell’s wife, later on, surveyed 160 acres of their land and subdivided it into forty-one blocks, which she sold as individual lots and named the platted area Town of Washington, later renamed Broderick.
The area soon enjoyed massive growth in the years that followed its formation. Farming and fishing industries thrived, boosted by the river valley, which had an abundance of salmon, crayfish,catfish,sturgeon,eel, and clams. The rich soil provided bountiful corn, melons, cucumbers, and sweet potatoes. Dairy farming was also doing very well, and the farmers and anglers from the area were supplying markets near and far with their produce.
A farmer known as Mike Bryte owned one of the largest ranches, but his property was later subdivided in the 20th century and gave rise to the community known today as Bryte.Other enterprises that thrived in the formative years of West Sacramento, CA, were restaurants, hotels, and saloons, which catered to the horde of travelers and prospectors as they made their way west to Sacramento during the Gold Rush.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Bryte, Broderick, and West Sacramento communities were collectively known as East Yolo. The three communities are the foundation of the current city of West Sacramento, CA, as it is today. In 1963, the completion of the Deep Water Ship Channel opened up the Port of Sacramento to marine traffic.
West Sacramento, CA, has a host of public and private schools. The Washington Unified School District operates a total of 7 elementary and one high school. Five alternative education program institutions are also run by this district, including four private schools in the city. Sacramento City College is found in the city too.
